Currently Watching #11

movie night ideas

Looking for some tv-series binging or a must watch (or must not) movie to check out? Here’s a look at what I’ve been curled up and chilling to lately.

Mad Men - Series Finale
I think we started Mad Men towards the back end of last year? We absolutely smashed through the 7 seasons - even though Netflix tried to wind me up by denying me the 7th and final season! Amazon Prime to the rescue, and a fiver well spent there! Where do I even begin with this one? I pretty much hated all the characters, even right at the end, I was maybe luke warm towards them but the writing, the visuals, the chemistry - freakin A+++! The dresses? I think I could do an entire post just on my love for the fashion of Mad Men. One of the best shows I have watched through for a long time. I have major issues with last ever episodes of shows, very rarely has a show I have loved ended well. Mad Men ends well. It really does. It ties everything up so nicely, with a little snippet into what the future might hold for the characters. It was heart warming, funny and heartbreaking all at the same time. OH I want to re-watch it already!

Amazing Hotels Beyond the Lobby S.2
This is one of my favourite shows! Season 1 was filled with some seriously breath taking, awe inspiring hotels - so much so I couldn’t imagine them finding any to rival them for a second season. But they have done it, and I swear, so far the season 2 hotels have been even more jaw dropping! From the size to the views, the amenities on offer and the more than a picture postcard worthy locations. I’ve added to many of them to my ‘if I win the lottery’ list!

The X-Files (new season on C5)
I know the season has come to an end but so far, I’m about 6 episodes in and it’s slow going. I remember when I first got into the X-Files. I couldn’t get enough of those Mulder & Scully chasing monsters with butterfly nets moments. But there’s something about the new season that isn’t gripping me in the same way. So many of the developing arcs are winding me up so much. They go against everything we thought we knew. And the Cigarette Smoking Man/William bomb that was dropped - nope, still not over it. Nope.

Battlestar Galactica
I first watched Battlestar about 4 - 5 years ago. I got through the entire show so fast I don’t think I took in even half of what was happening. Watching it back now I am noticing so much more. It genuinely feels like I’m watching it for the first time! One thing that really really get’s me is the music choices. Hands down, the best I’ve ever heard on a television show. They just nail it every time, and I swear, some pieces bring me close to tears.

Jumanji (the new one)
The original Jumanji film will always hold a special place in my heart, the sound of the drumming still gives me goosebumps! I had no idea what to expect from the re-make but it turned out to be 10x better than I was expecting! It was a Jumanji film without trying to rip off, or take anything away, from the original. It could easily have been a stand alone adventure! I found it to be genuinely funny and the little nods to the original film were just too perfect. Would recommend.

Spiderman: Homecoming
Just another Marvel film. Meh. I wanted to like this one, and in parts I did, I think. But it was so so long. No way did it need to be 2 hours long. There were too many random insignificant moments than added nothing to the story. The only bit I actually did enjoy was finally discovering which character was MJ!

Master and Commander
I actually read the first book in the Master and Commander series a while back and it was a chore. A great book but a heavier, older style that took me a while to get my head around! Can I remember much of it? Nope! When Matt picked this film one night I was convinced I’d be asleep before the first half was over. Wrong. I was friggin hooked! This film! I didn’t even see the 2 hours go by and I want more by the end of it! Russel Crowe and Paul Bettany are phenomenal together! The drama, the humour, it all just rolls seamlessly. It’s beautifully shot and the action scenes are just manic in the best possible way. It puts your right into the heart of a ship at war on the seas. Just brilliant. Brilliant.

What have you been watching lately?

Until next time,
