Walt Disney World 2016: Part 3 - Day 2

Day 2 - Epcot

Way back when we first started going to Walt Disney World and I was a but a tiny Saloca, Epcot was my least favourite park. I could never get into the whole World Showcase vibe, it did nothing for me, and the rides were cool but it was more about things to look at than do. Suffice to say, I have (in some ways at least) grown older and wiser and have come to seriously love Epcot! It could also have something to do with being over the legal drinking age…

We had early fast-passes for Soarin - the new update is amazing but I kind of miss kicking the canoeist (You disney go-ers will know what I mean!). After a quick jaunt across the world, we hopped off our gliders and headed over to Sunshine seasons for breakfast. We went here years ago and it was bad. Very. Thanks to the magic of the internet I’d heard it had been updated and was getting good reviews, so figured it was worth another try! I had a cinnamon toast bread pudding with bacon (not that you can call American bacon, bacon!). It looked a bit er….interesting? But it actually tasted surprisingly good with a ton of maple syrup on top!

We finished up and jumped on Living with the Land which I absolutely love and figure really is a sign of me getting older - but who doesn’t want to see tomatoes growing upside down and Mickey shaped pumpkins? It’s fascinating stuff! And then…it was time for our next fast pass to see…

M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E (you better have sung that!)

I’ve never actually been in the Character Stop in Epcot but it was brilliant! You get crackin’ pictures with Mickey, Goofy, Pluto and Minnie and have a laugh whilst your at it! Top character meet moments included;

  • The Mr being forced into a huge hug from Mickey Mouse and not really knowing what to do!
  • Dad thinking Goofy was asking him the time when he was actually going for a fist bump!
  • Seeing the look on other peoples faces as they went up for their pictures!

I love people watching at these kinds of things, especially when you see really tiny kids meeting their heroes for the first time! Oh be still my ovaries!

Next up, World Showcase! 11 pavilions showcasing 11 different countries cultures, traditions, food, wares and more! AND we where travelling during Food and Wine festival so you know what that means…more pavillions, more countries, and more food! Food and Wine is my favourite time to go but I’ve only ever dabbled in the delights it has on offer - and a big part of this trip was all about really getting to experience the festival and everything it had to offer!

We had a big tour of the festival planned for the coming weekend so just had a mooch at what was offer as we made our way over to the Japan pavilion for lunch!
Have you noticed how everything seems to be revolving around food on this trip?

Katsura Grill is one of my favourite places to stop for something to eat! From the infamous cutlet curry to the iced green tea and green tea cheesecake - it’s all soooo good! The noodle bowls are really tasty and the ice cream on offer is no ordinary vanilla! There’s a great atmosphere, a koi pond outside, and the prettiest blossoms and lanterns you ever did see - it’s about as far away as you can get from being in a theme park and then some!

Ok….so we had our food and wine festival binge planned for the weekend but it would have been rude to continue to walk past so many stalls and not partake in just a little of what they had to offer…

I’m talking margaritas
I’m talking German beer flights
I’m talking rum
I’m talking Kung Fu Panda punch

I’m talking I ended up sitting on an elephant for a while…

Oh food and wine festival you beautiful thing!

I’m not going to say I was drunk (because my parents are probably reading this and about to phone me up and ask about the elephant) but I was very merry shall we say which for me, was a first in Disney…and not exactly a last either…but anyways!  We meandered around the showcase, sampling festival delights, and just generally taking it all in.

We eventually headed back to the hotel and called it a night. The jet lag was still niggling around the edges so we grabbed tea at the hotel, I took a quick dip in the pool and we called it an early night…tomorrow was going to be a big day for little ol’ me! Afterall, how often do you get to wake up on your birthday in Disney?

You can find the rest of the Florida trip report series here!

Until next time,

  1. I didn't go on Soarin and I regret it so much. I watched a live viewing on a Disney blog and it looks awesome!

    Drunk Saloca is the best.
