Secret Garden Cinema - Liverpool

secret garden cinema liverpool

The iconic Liverpool skyline, a sky full of stars, deck chairs, a cheeky vino, Richard Gere, Julia Roberts and that iconic film - Secret Garden Cinema is something kind of special.

Secret Garden Cinema is Liverpool's first premium rooftop cinema, showing some seriously amazing, cult classic films on the rooftop of Queens Square car park. From Grease to Pretty Woman, The Goonies, Fight Club, Dirty Dancing, Jaws and more. Seriously, how has nobody thought of doing this before? Why didn’t I think of doing this? Genius. Right now, it’s only going to be around for Summer 2015, but here’s hoping as its popularity grows it will stick around a lot longer!

We decided to have ourselves a really girly Friday night, so after some prosecco and too much food, we ventured up to the rooftop of Queens Square car park and found ourselves greeted with the magic of the Secret Garden. Faux grass lined the car park, hiding those white parking lines. A bamboo screen has been erected down one side to hide the cars parked behind. At the back, there was a stall set up selling hand-made wood fired pizzas, popcorn, alcohol, soft drinks and hot drinks too plus lots of different bags of sweets to munch on! We were spoilt for choice and instant regretting the big meal we had earlier!

Upon arrival, we were given some very cool wireless headphones and a really warm Ikea blanket that came in really handy as the sun set and the not so summers evening set in! We also treated ourselves to some sweet, popcorn and a very cheeky glass of red wine, though thinking about it now, a brew might have kept me a little warmer!

They had some garden games set up too - I kicked ass at connect 4 - and have a very awkward looking winners pose!

We picked the night Pretty Woman was on, as we are all huge fans of the film! As the sun began to set just after 9 pm, the film started up. We popped on our headphones, which, I have to say where amazing! They didn’t lose signal once, the sound quality was perfect and we didn’t have any interference - unbelievable as we were right on top of the Radio City tower! We wrapped ourselves up in our blankets and settled in!

The only time I have ever watched a film out in the open was in Florida, so the climate was a little different! The whole experience of watching one of my favourite films with my favourite city as the backdrop, a setting sun and twinkling stars, oh me oh my it’s all the feels!

Yes, I was freezing cold. Teeth chattering, goosebumps on goosebumps, freezing! I could have given Olaf a run for his money! I had my blanket, and a scarf but I really did need a few extra layers! Note is taken for next time!

We had an absolute ball, it was such a different way to hang out and see a film, and being able to watch such a cult favourite made it all the more fun! We left just before 11.30pm and I managed to make it home before the rain hit! (If it rains during the film they do give you ponchos!)

Tickets are £15 for one, or £20 for a couple to share a ‘love seat’ deck chair. A little pricier than heading to the Odeon but a fantastic, unique night out that has to be experience this summer!

Have you ever watched a film under the stars? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,

    1. So far it's only going to be around for Summer 2015 so you might want to pop into Liverpool before you move or you might miss is!

    1. It was just fantastic, definatly something ticked off the bucket list! I really want to go to a drive through cinema next - but I don't have a car haha! 'Secret' cinemas, especially outdoor ones seem to be gaining popularity so I'm sure one will appear near you soon enough!

  4. Ahh a rooftop cinema sounds amazing. I wish we had something like this around me. We do have an outdoor cinema where you listen to the movie through a radio station... I've never been to it so I don't exactly know how it works, but that's what I've heard :P
