Piccolino - Liverpool

piccolino liverpool review

Piccolino in Liverpool is one of those places I’ve been dying to try for I don’t know how long! Friends rave all the time about the food there and have spent so much time telling me to go that I finally used Mr’s birthday as the ticket to dine!

With its opulent decor, hardwood floors, mood lighting and open kitchen, you instantly feel like you’re in for something special. I mean they check your coat on the door - you just don’t get that all that often unless you're paying through the nose for it!

We arrived just after 5pm, mid-week, after having a few birthday cocktails to celebrate Mr’s birthday. We were really hungry and ready to eat. Apart from a family and a trio of ladies who lunch, we had the pick of the floor. We sat in a semi-booth in the corner where I could eye-spy what everyone else was ordering.

Specialising in the best, seasonal produce, cheeses, meat, and seafood that create immense Italian flavours, the menu covered everything from steak to pasta, risotto, fish and very very fancy pants steaks with all the trimmings. There was also a daily specials menu, where something happened to catch Mr’s eye.

We skipped starters and ordered some drinks and went straight for the mains. I went for the Salmone, roasted salmon with peas, pancetta, ditalini pasta and herbs, and Mr had the USDA Aberdeen Angus Steak that was from the specials menu, which came with fries and a porcini mushroom sauce

They gave us a little bread basket to nibble on whilst we waited for our mains which was nice, who doesn’t love a little bread with balsamic and olive oil? It ties us over nicely until our mains arrived which took no time at all. The restaurant was still pretty quiet so the serving staff were extra attentive, complimenting our orders and going out of their way to make sure everything was to our liking. They were just delightful!

The salmone was amazing! It fell apart without me even touching it, flaked beautifully and every mouthful was tastier than the last. The only downside was there was a few little pickles on the plate - and I can’t stand pickles! But they got pushed as far away as possible and stayed there! No harm done!

Mr’s steak was amazing, the knife glided through it like butter and the porcini mushroom sauce was just, wow. It even tasted great with the salmon - I kept whipping a bit off the edges of his plate when I thought he wasn’t looking! I’m not usually bowled over by fries either but these were very tasty, extra crispy and with some sort of coating that just made them, mmm, so good!

Full from our mains we decided to split dessert and went for the ciccolatini, handmade truffles flavoured with Frangelico liqueur. Oh! Be still my sweeting heart! dusted with cocoa and so soft and flavoursome, it took us a while to work our way through them as they were unbelievably rich! The Frangelico, a hazelnut liqueur, was so smooth and delicious, for something so rich you would expect them to be very sickly but I could have dined on them for the rest of the evening!

Another drink, a chat, some people watching and bill paying, our time at Piccolino had come to an end - we left already planning what we would try the next time we go back! They have an amazing lunch menu that I really want to try, up to 2 courses for just £15, a steal considering the quality of the food and the high class of the establishment!

There are a whopping 21 Piccolino restaurants across the UK, so you have no excuse not to find your nearest one and try it for yourself!

Have you dined at a Piccolino before? What would you choose - salmon or steak? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,
