Origins Original Skin Serum & Retexturizing Mask

origins original skin renewal

The Original Skin renewal serum is winning awards left, right and centre of late, but why? Designed for skin that’s have a quarter life crisis - skin that’s possibly starting to show signs of some wear and tear, ageing, damage and the general stresses that life has brought so far.

Original Skin aims to restore lustre and life back to your skin in 5 ways;

De-stressing Persian Silk Tree brings back a youthful appearance,
Chestnut Seed Extract smooths roughness and refines texture,
Willowherb gives your skin a pretty but non-greasy glow,
Algae absorbs oil and minimises the appearance of pores, and finally, with a slight tint, it minimises flaws and blurs imperfections.

That’s a lot of promise.

I use this in the am, after cleansing and before moisturising. I use about 5 pumps worth, then smooth it across my face, neck and d├ęcolletage. Though it pumps out with a pink/beige tint, it actually goes on completely clear. After a minute or two I then go ahead and apply my moisturiser - my old faithful Olay Daily Beauty Fluid with SPF for normal/oily skin. Now, here’s where the magic starts to happen.

My skin starts to look more even overall, pores appear slightly minimised but nothing to shout home about, but any redness does appear reduced. I tried going a couple of days without using the serum and did notice my skin started to develop a more lack-lustre appearance in just a couple of days.

With the serum a firm favourite and already re-purchased twice now, the Original Skin Retexturizing mask came out and I had to find out if it was just as good. Filled with similar ingredients to its sister serum, the face mask also contains rose clay and jojoba beads.

The mask doubles up as an exfoliating cleanser too, so don’t do what I did and exfoliate before using this mask, just cleanse your face as normal, then apply the mask to clean, dry skin. As soon as you start to smooth it onto your face you’ll feel the jojoba beads, they’re going to come in handy later on!

The mask itself goes on great, smooth and you only need a thin layer to cover your whole face. It dries in under 10 minutes but isn’t as uncomfortable as other clay masks when it does.Like all clay masks, the rose clay draws dirt out and unclogs pores, removing impurities and excess oil build up. Once the mask is nice and dry, take some warm water and, using either your fingers or a muslin cloth, remove the mask. You’ll notice as it gets wet, it takes on a creamy texture, making it easy to work the jojoba beads into your skin, further removing dirt and dead skin cells, retexturizing your skins surface.

The results? Rosy, glowing skin that looks like it’s just spent a day at the spa. Though I loved using the Original Skin Renewal mask, it still doesn’t beat their Clear Improvement mask for me! I would rather exfoliate my skin before I put a mask on, not after!

Do you need the duo? Personally, I’d say no. Though I enjoy using them both separately, one or the other would be enough to add to your skin care regime. They do the same thing, so if you’re looking to smooth texture, blur imperfections and even skins overall appearance, they will both achieve this. The mask retails for £23 (note, they have yet to release the travel sized pods), the serum, £32, but personally I think you’ll see better results from daily use of the serum, so it is worth investing the extra.

What would you choose? Serum or mask? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,

  1. I want this now. Give me. Clay masks make me uncomfortable though weh.

I've never tried a pore minimising product that works.

    1. They're not the comfiest thing in the world but there's something really satisfying when you wiggle your cheeks after it dries and it cracks! Or when you jump out and scare the crap out of someone because you look like the creature from the deep! Fun times!
